Nay for me. They look terrible and I’m just not the type of guy to think it’s realistic that your car is never going to get scratched elsewhere, so ... why does the bumper get special treatment?

Saw a 335i M-Sport with stripes, terrible looking M spoiler, an add-on M badge on the back AND X-DRIVE with a bumper bra today. That’s how this thought came into my head.

Edit - Mixed up terminology, meant bumper bras.

Got a pic? Never heard of these...unless you mean the lower part of the bra in the front.

It helps protect against all the unnecessary damage other parallel parkers cause due to shitty driving in the city.

Sorry, I mixed up terminology. I did mean bumper “bras”.

bumper protectors

bumper covers

I understand protectors...do not understand leaving them out when driving, I’d figure them bouncing around would lead to all sorts of minor blemishes...

Yeah, my bad. I understand protectors too (in a city). I mixed up terminology and meant “bras”.

Ahhh, gotcha. I used to have one on my black Golf in the 90s. It’s really there against rock chips and bugs, but when all was said and done, the amount of dust and crap collected behind it was more a risk to the paint than the chips and bugs. Just too much a pain to deal with.

These things were SO 1980s and have made small comebacks over time, but I almost never see them anymore.

They still sell non-clear bras? I thought those died in the 90s...

I’d use one to drive across the country (no blue tape for me). But for day-to-day use, no.

They do look awful, but I’m not above using that when parked... I don’t have a nice car (yet), but when street parking here in NJ, people have no qualms about ramming bumpers. Our Sienna is crazy spidered because of that.

I lived in Brooklyn for a year... the Fusion was pretty lucky to come out unscathed.

No. My brother-in-law has a Mustang that had one when he bought it. It looks pretty funny now because everywhere under was protected from the sun and the paint is still in decent shape while the rest of the car is faded and the clear is peeling. There’s a clear line of decent paint and faded paint. I guess it doesn’t matter if you’re not keeping the car long enough to fade, but it still looks ridiculous on the car.

I had one for a while, but only because it added some more black to the styling. Tinted windows, black trim, black top.. the front needed something.

But now I run without it.

No: the cloth ones move around and any minute debris that gets under them makes the device act like a giant piece of sandpaper. The clear plastic ones are OK as a temporary measure, but are only slightly effective, and if left on ling enough there’s a clear difference in where the paint was and wasn’t covered, which looks worse than normal chips and dings.

Buy a factory-quality touch up paint pen - and clearcoat, or an all-in-one like Duplicolor's -and some knee pads and a good light. Cars are relatively disposable, treat them as such.

Nay. what is the point? Theoretically, they protect the cars good looks.... by making the car look like shit.. For what? Some later date where you get to take it off and admire your factory fresh bumper while the rest of your paint has faded? There is no good excuse for a bra on a car.
